When I first headed out
with my buddies for a short evening out, I wasn't aware it'd end so nicely
courtesy of a splendid movie. There were three of us, and I just so
happened to be carrying some of my free movie passes, and it was time to
make good use of them. So what better of a movie than "300", a
movie that promised to be bloody, show killing, and be manly. Indeed, I
was anxious and looking forward to the cinematic adventure I was about to
embark on.
I'm going to try to
avoid talking about the plot or any major parts to prevent being a
spoiler, so, bear with me.
My friend and fellow
FartStock writer, Rosie, had already seen it but was willing to see it
again, I mean, hell, it was a free movie on a somewhat uneventful evening,
so why not? Previously, Rosie had mentioned that the battle scenes annoyed
him due to the fact that they were mostly in slow-motion, I was hoping
that I wouldn't feel the same way.
As soon as the movie
began, I was impressed. The director had a great way of showing things.
Very calm coloring and very visually pleasing. To quote the gay kid from
Wedding Crashers, "it's violent and sexual". None of the colors
were too in your face, everything was very subtle which gave off almost a
sorrowful feel. Right from the beginning, I also noticed the
"costumes" the actors/actresses were wearing. They were very
well done, unique, and sometimes simple but got the point across.

There was some slight
nudity, which was done in a pretty artistic way. It wasn't a "wow,
check out that chick!" type of thing at all. It just looked artistic
and very well shot. The battle scenes were even better. From when the
Spartans are first marching out all the way to the final stand. The
scenery was amazing, as were the visuals. The whole "slow-motion
scenes" thing didn't bother me at all. I felt like it was a great way
to show the "glory" and suffering of battle during that time
period. There was plenty of blood squirting, which was awesome as well,
but it wasn't that great of blood. By that, I mean, it wasn't "Saving
Private Ryan" type of blood gush, where it looked realistic, in
"300", it looked more... dull and fake. But it was entertaining,
nonetheless, especially if you like legs and heads getting chopped off...
numerous times.
Outside of the awesome
visual effects and imagery, the plot and story was great as well. It
didn't take any ridiculous turns, nor did it end how you'd want it to. It
ended in the realistic way. If you want to know, look up the true story
that "300" was based on. That's another thing, although
"300" was supposedly based off of a comic, it was somewhat
historical and very respectable in that light. By no means was it a
history class, but it wasn't a complete pile of bullshit either.
Overall, "300"
was well worth the free movie passes, hell, I might have paid to see it.
It's even got some dude from "Lord Of The Rings" in it, so, I
mean, c'mon!
Final Grade:
A
Blood could have been better, and it was at times, a little
"choppy". Great otherwise though, one to buy on DVD and see in
theaters.
